I’m João Vilar, a finance professional based in São Paulo with a background in computer science. My work brings together financial markets, energy, and technology: understanding what drives a business, measuring its risks, and building tools that make complex information easier to use.
Markets and experience
At BTG Pactual, I work in Finance supporting the Energy LatAm and Financial Commodities businesses. My responsibilities span P&L attribution, market risk, exposure and hedge analysis, alongside financial modeling for energy assets, capacity contracts, and commercial opportunities. I also follow Latin American energy markets, connecting pricing dynamics and supply-demand fundamentals with business performance.
My experience at BTG also includes OTC derivatives, with pricing validation and payoff calculations for options, swaps, NDFs, and structured products. Working across Trading, Sales, Risk, and Operations gave me a view of the full product lifecycle, from valuation through registration and settlement.
Before focusing on markets, I worked on automation at BTG, developing internal applications and improving workflows, controls, and reporting. I also gained experience in pricing and process improvement at Itaú Unibanco.
A technical foundation
I hold a BSc in Computer Science from the Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCar). Programming remains part of how I approach problems: breaking them down, testing assumptions, and turning repeated work into reliable processes.
I use Python, SQL, VBA, Node.js, and Excel for analysis and automation, with additional programming experience in C and C++. My financial work covers modeling, derivatives valuation, P&L attribution, Value at Risk (VaR), and exposure and hedge analysis.
I have passed Level I of the CFA Program and completed additional coursework in financial statement analysis, multivariate data analysis, and machine learning. I was also selected as a contributor to Google Summer of Code, an international open-source software development program.
Portuguese is my native language. I’m fluent in English, with intermediate Spanish and basic French.
